Not satisfied with the extended embarrasingly slur-fest that was Overcast Episode 16, cairmen and I recorded a series of interviews with prominent machinima superstars during the 2007 European Machinima Festival.
At the time, it seemed like a good idea. We were drunk, so was everybody else – why not take them back to our room and get them to recount their top 3 “machinima moments”? What could possibly go wrong?
Well. As you’ll hear if you’re brave enough to listen to the first of four interviews, when we’re as drunk as that and we think we’ve got a bleep machine, we use language and concepts that would make my prostitute blush. The thing I feel have to stress is this: we really, genuinely did believe that all our filthy expletives would be bleeped in post-production. We originally recorded this under the banner of Machinima For Dummies and Wiley Publishing. In the end, the filth-to-pre-watershed ratio was just so high that it was virtually un-bleepable. So we sent it to Overman. Not even his mad zound skillx were enough to bleep it properly, so we left it uncut and released it as an Overcast special. The only thing that’s bleeped now is any mention of Wiley or Machinima For Dummies.
The Overcast Episode 24 is – I really can’t stress this highly enough – NSFW. But, if you like the sound of a drunken Yorkshireman slurring obscenities into a microphone – and I know of at least one of you who does – then this is for you. There are another three to come, too, and they just get worse.
My poor mother would be so ashamed. Thank god she has no idea how to use the internet, and so never reads this blog.
Trackback – Hey kids! Hear me being drunk!

I recorded an episode of The Overcast, a machinima-themed podcast, last week. The first part of the interview is now online, and by all the gods, it’s embarrassing. I hadn’t had a lot of sleep when I recorded this at one o’clock in the morning. It’s also fair to say that I was, in the words of Paul Whitehouse, “very, very drunk”.

I have to talk about The Overcast. Episode 14 (which, purely incidentally, was released on the 1st of April) consisted of an interview between Overman and digital-phil, the host of the now dead and lamented Machinima Live podcast. We all know that there were tensions between the two Phils whilst the podcast was still in production, and nobody was sure exactly how they’d left things. Now we know.
The interview was a brilliantly spoofed argument between the two of them, which gradually descended into name-calling and personal grudge-bearing, culminating in Overman demanding an explanation as to why digital-phil chose to eat pancakes rather than interview cairmen and myself.
The whole thing worked so well because it was based on truth. We did record an episode of Machinima Live, which was never broadcast (the infamous “lost episode”) because of a problem on digital-phil’s PC which corrupted the audio file beyond all repair. I happen to know that a lot of the other supposed irritations that the two Phils threw at each other during the course of the podcast were also, as they say in Hollywood, “inspired by true events”.
I actually emailed Overman shortly after the episode was released, asking if it was a spoof or not. I didn’t post on any of the machinima forums expressing my opinion one way or another, because I was too cowardly to risk being exposed as a victim of the gag.
I feel too guilty about that, now, so I’m going to say this publicly: you got me. Totally and utterly. I did realise that the whole thing was probably an April Fool’s joke, but only after listening to it for a third time, and even then I wasn’t totally sure.
Here (after the cut) is the complete, unedited email that I sent to Overman. Can you feel me covering all my bases?
